Once my rig is set up there’s not a lot of space in my little music studio! But I don’t mind. It suffices. I did some practice today, we have a show next week at The Royal, in Nundah, that’s in north Brisbane.
A while back, I heard Tyrone Downey playing No Woman No Cry and doing the outro on a clavinet or harpsichord, and Maui and I recently agreed I could do something similar, playing underneath his guitar outro. So I tried that today, playing something in a Pachebel’s Canon kind of style. Ha! It was fiddly. Cool playing Mr. Downey. I’ll have fun working on that. I’ve picked an Arturia V Collection patch which is a harpsichord and electric piano hybrid sound, hoping that will cut through the mix.
I’m also using an Allan & Heath ZED 10 mixer for the first time, which I got secondhand from Facebook market place. It’s the one on the right. Now I have two mixers ๐. But it’s for hearing myself in one channel and getting front-of-house coming in on another channel. It may be possible to lose the Radial Key Largo (sitting on the AstroLab and mixing the three boards) but that’s such a solid beauty, I love it too much. And it has volume pedal connections, I don’t think the ZED has that.
It’s great that we’ve gone to in-ears โ that means hearing ourselves on stage via ear pieces, or headphones in my case. No more big wedge monitors blasting back at us on stage. No more ringing in my ears for days afterwards, too. Fantastic! I did worry about that. I want to still be able to hear all the softest sounds on my piano, when I’m older…

These days I just write about my little life. But in the past I wrote about creatives I met. You can find that in the Tag Cloud below.
