Btari is my lovely, intelligent teenage student who has been with me for about 2 years.
She has beautiful, unmanicured fingernails which are long and prevent her from curling her fingers as I would like her to, when she plays.
Now, she is a serious, thoughtful student, but I’m not sure how piano fits into her priorities. I mean, girls enjoy beautiful nails, right?
So I said hey, you know, if you want to really improve your piano playing, you’ll have to cut your nails. I’m not insisting on it, since I don’t know how important piano playing is in your life. But I must let you know this.
In London, about 25 years ago, I did see a young Joanna MacGregor perform an amazing jazz repertoire with long beautiful fingernails. But for us mere mortals, I think it’s better to keep them short, at least while we are learning.
So imagine how happy I was to see that she had cut her nails the following week!
Wow, Btari. That’s a big deal. I’m proud of you. Now I know that you really care about learning piano and I feel great about that. See you soon 🙂
