First comping – Firework VIDEO

[Posting clips of my students performing lets them know I’m proud of them. Learning music – like learning most things – is a series of little steps, every step significant, and hopefully taken with a sense of pleasure and adventure.]

It’s not only teenagers who want to play pop songs and learn to comp! Anna has just started to play triad chords in her left hand, with a melody going in her right hand at the same time. Playing with both hands and chords too. Awesome!

I said, “You know, you can play all sorts of songs once you know a few chords.”

The following week Anna ran into the room, climbed up onto the piano seat (yes, climbed is the word) and plonked Katy Perry’s “Firework” onto the music stand.

The music had the melody for the right hand, with four guitar chord symbols as accompaniment. There were pictures below to show where the triad chords were on the keyboard.

In this video you can almost feel Anna’s brain determinedly finding those chords on the keyboard for her left hand!

What a start! There’s no stopping you now Anna!

There’s just something about crossing the line to playing, for the first time, music of your own choosing, which you have sought out. I happen to love “Firework.”

“Right on!” from Ann to Anna across the globe.
